Blogging is one of the top ways you can bring potential customers to your website and boost your brand awareness. But, what I often see are companies that start blogging with lots of enthusiasm which eventually fades after a few weeks or months. To really get the benefits of blogging, you need to produce quality content consistently, not just once in a blue moon.
The Benefits of Blogging Consistently
While there are many benefits to business blogging, there are some key benefits to making your efforts consistent throughout the year.
Keeps audience engaged
The digital landscape is all about content. Whether on social media, email or on websites, there is a huge amount of content to consume. For audiences that are interested in your industry or niche, producing consistent content can ensure they remain engaged. This is a vital goal to pursue if you want to grow your audience and build leads. An engaged audience that consistently reads your blogs will be more likely to purchase from you in the long run. There is nothing more frustrating than finding a really interesting blog article via social media or searching to discover the website hasn’t posted anything new in over a year! Keep it consistent and high quality and your readership will grow.
Establishes authority
By producing content consistently for a blog you are letting your audience know that you are dedicated to your craft. While of course, you are producing blogs for commercial benefits frequently, this is not always the case. I write on my blog for SEO purposes but it also provides me with the focus and encouragement to learn new skills and explore topics that I love and that impact my business directly. By highlighting to your readers new information, tutorials and topics that are relevant to them, you establish yourself as an authority in your niche.
Search engines reward you
Google and other search engines are continually reviewing your site. By creating blogs routinely, it provides search engines with more information to evaluate you on. Here are some of the main SEO advantages of blogging regularly.
- It lets search engines know that your site is still active.
- Quality blogs that are brand-new, highlight that your content is relevant to users.
- Updating blogs from a historical optimisation perspective shows you are actively reviewing and renewing content.
It’s all about relevancy because search engines want to show the most relevant results to their customers: the searchers.
Provides a flow of marketing
One of the best things about having regular blogs live on your site is the ability to produce endless pieces of content from just one article. A blog post can be so much more than the one time you hit publish. Here are just some ways you can make the most of one article.
- Expand it into a white paper
- Break an article into several chunks and repurpose it across several social media posts
- Share a condensed version via email
- Create cheat sheets that customers can download
- Talk about the ideas in a podcast
- Create a video with the same info
- Share directly with clients who need a little bit of help on the topic
- make an infographic version
- Use as a landing page for PPC ads or social ads
- Create a slideshow of the main points for social media
There are countless ways to re-envision your content and make it do double duty.
How to Start Blogging Consistently
So now you know the benefits, here’s how you keep it consistent. It’s going to be different for every business and individual but these are things I think make it easy to keep your blog updated.
- Create a long term plan. While it may seem overwhelming at first, creating a strategic content marketing strategy for at least 3 months is the way to go. If you know what you’ll be writing next, it takes the pressure off for ideas. Brainstorming ideas can help get the creative juices flowing and means you can create a plan that aligns with your overall SEO strategy and your digital marketing as a whole.
- Choose a frequency pattern that is achievable. As I said earlier, there is nothing worse than discovering some really useful resources from a brand to only discover they no longer post. Don’t try to do it all if you don’t have the capacity. While some websites produce 50 posts a day, some can thrive on 50 blogs a year. While there is evidence to suggest that increased blog production can increase traffic, small businesses should always focus on quality over quantity. You’ll run yourself or your team into the ground if you try to compete with the big brands.
- Produce a checklist. There is more to blogs than just the writing. Research, editing, scheduling, promoting and reviewing are all part of the process. Creating a checklist for every single aspect of the creation of a blog is paramount in keeping work consistent. It also alleviates your brain from having to remember every step.
