Overview
A sustainable jewellery designer and artist seeks to rebuild their website in a ethical website framework following a boycott of their current provider.
Challenges
Jess, the Sheffield-based artist and jewellery designer behind The Hummingbird Archives, originally came to me in 2024 for an SEO audit and some design tweaks to her WIX site. But after learning late in 2024 that WIX is on the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) list, she made the decision to move her site to a more ethical platform.
Objectives
Rebuild the site in WordPress before their renewal with WIX lapsed and redesign the site inline with updated branding and colour scheme.
Suggested Solutions
Move all content from the old site into a new rebuild of the site using the WordPress platform, adding additional informational pages for expanded services. Look at new branding to create a more fun and vibrant design that reflects the colourful nature of the business.
Implementation
Once Jess shared her reasons (and I read up on WIX’s controversy, including firing of Dublin employee Courtney Carey after she criticised Israel), I was 100% on board. I worked with their chosen designer to adopt an updated brand colour scheme and implement it into the website design from the start. We created all the areas of the site with the new design directly in a demo site to speed up work and make quick adjustments during feedback. The site was enhanced with WooCommerce, along with additional newsletter sign-up features and design elements that reflect the brand's playful spirit. To complement the geometric designs of Jess's jewellery and artwork, we incorporated numerous geometric shapes into the layouts of each page, using beautiful photography of her pieces to tie everything together. Additionally, we assisted in moving the site's domain and hosting to our eco-friendly provider. We also implemented ethical analytics tracking to help the website monitor its marketing efforts and grow while maintaining its ethical commitments.

It looks absolutely brilliant, I love it!
Results
The client was thrilled with the results and took sales as soon as the site was launched. I was so happy to support a client who chose ethics first.
Successfully Moved Away from WIX
We completed the project before the deadline, moving all assets before another renewal payment was given to an unethical provider. Visit The Hummingbird Archive site
Created a design that reflected the brand
The site was quite plain previously, but with an updated colour scheme and a focus on pulling in geometric elements and highlighting Jess' beautiful work, the site now reflects this vivid brand.
Supported Ethical Principles
Not only did we move from WIX, but we also implemented privacy-first analytics on the site and moved the domain and hosting to a green provider. I’ve since decided to no longer work on WIX websites, except to help clients move away from them. You can read more about the boycott of WIX here.
